JunglescapesPaintings and Drawings October 12 - November 11, 2006 O·H+T gallery is pleased to introduce the work of Kyong Ae Kim with an exhibition of paintings and drawings from her series Junglescapes. A recent MFA graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Kyong has also received training in traditional Korean painting. This exposure to both Eastern and Western Cultures and artistic traditions is evident in her work. Dark and mysterious, Kyong Ae Kim’s paintings portray fantastical landscapes where odd life forms co-habit a world of imagined biology. Reminiscent of Asian landscapes, these flatly painted acrylic works depict swampy ecosystems where all life seems to be frozen in time. In Junglescape 8, a rock jetty cantilevers out over a black sea, from which mountainous forms rise in the distance. A cobalt blue, mossy tree figure with a pink spiral hanging like a snared kite from one branch, occupies the foreground. Biological forms here are neither flora nor fauna, but hybrids which seem to occupy common ground after a long process for evolution and adaptation. Kyong Ae Kim’s gouache-like drawings reverse her palette with odd naturescapes painted in chalky earth-tones on white grounds. Kyong Ae Kim lives and works in Boston. She has recently relocated from the West Coast where she received an MFA degree in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her BFA degree is from the School of Arts, Chung-Ang University, Soeul, Korea. She has exhibited her work on the East and West coasts, as well as in South Korea. This is her first one-person exhibiton at O·H+T. |
