New PaintingsPeik Larsen
February 4 - 26, 2005 O·H+T gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Peik Larsen. As he continues to look to the natural realm for his subject matter, Larsen introduces aquatic flora and fauna into this work. Sinuous, overlapping limbs can still be seen in Peik Larsen's paintings, though these are no longer solely the branches and trunks of abstracted trees. New ovoid forms, possibly leaves or fish, dart and drift among undulating vegetation. The color in the new work is less earthy, and is suffused with light. As Larsen experiments with various media (acrylic, pigment, printing mediums), he layers washes of varying saturation to create luminescent colors. In Rasbora, the background is almost colorless, yet there is a watery, yellow glow backlighting the striped shapes that zip about in a chaotic, energetic whirl of activity, much like tropical fish. Larsen's paintings, often informed by his prints, display an intuitive approach to materials. Embracing accidents and unanticipated effects, Larsen relies on serendipity to freshen his images and energize the surfaces of his paintings. Untitled, a small, pale blue painting, enlists blotted, red paint splats to participate in the frenzied interaction of colorful leaf/fish shapes. Peik Larsen lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has exhibited his work at Volume Gallery/ New York, LFL Gallery/New York, DNA Gallery/Provincetown, MA, and Harvard University. This is his second solo exhibition at O·H+T gallery. |
