White, Black and InbetweenWork by Gallery Artists
December 3 -22, 2004 O·H+T gallery is pleased to present White, Black and Inbetween, an exhibition of work by gallery artists including: Katherine Jackson, Judith Larsen, Peik Larsen, Patrick Strzelec, Thaddeus Beal, Marietta Hoferer, and Ryan Steadman. Katherine Jackson's two large iris prints, one black and one white, depict lines of text copied repeatedly to form a twinkling field of light and dark. On closer viewing one sees the names of 110 artists rendered in pinpoint size dots. This piece is Jackson's tribute to artists and the ever-shifting patterns of their relationships and interconnections. Judith Larsen continues her work with the figure, in two black and white pigment prints. In Plating, a food grater is projected onto a figure kneeling in fetal position to create a jaggedly textured oval. Two figures fit together to form a bowl, in Chelona, while a black and white, abstract pattern is projected onto this form to suggest an ancient Mimbres pot. Peik Larsen's small, monochromatic landscape paintings are spare and wintery, yet they are not cold. The whites are creamy, the blacks are inky blue, and the gesturally painted trees are sensual. Patrick Strzelec's pair of sculptures (one black and one white) are small and animated. Each piece is a rope of painted bronze. One wanders and finally crumples into a loopy pile, while the other raises its rubber, handle-shaped head in cobra fashion. They demonstrate Strzelec's ability to transform common, seemingly uninteresting shapes. Ryan Steadman's wry figure paintings in shades of grey, Marietta Hoferer's shimmering and illusive tape drawings, Thaddeus Beal's small, dark geometric prints, will be among additional works included in the exhibition. |
