The Music of SpheresGregory Gomez
October 8 - 30, 2004 O·H+T gallery is pleased to present The Music of Spheres, an exhibition of new paintings by Gregory Gomez. The title of Gomez's exhibition refers to a belief dating back to the ancient Greeks that the planets are linked to the Western musical scale. This notion of a harmonic foundation for a mathematically structured universe is echoed in contemporary physics, and is one of the sources for Gomez's paintings. His historically and conceptually diverse influences (theoretical physics, Pre-Columbian pictographs, genetic sequencing, and ancient cartography) are revealed in images that emerge when layers of gouache are abraded by an industrial sandblaster. The visual diversity of these seemingly weathered pieces gives them the appearance of artifacts from a succession of cultures. Impulses and Oscillations could be a page from an alchemical journal. Its combination of chemical symbols, esoteric words, and quasi-mathematical equations layered on a parchment colored background, suggest a mysterious hieroglyphic document. The Music of Spheres is bolder in color and form, yet the sweeping arcs and jutting angles suggest an unknown geometry or architectural plans from a lost civilization. Though the meaning of these works is not necessarily evident, their weathered patina and oddly familiar colors remind one of worn, everyday objects. Gregory Gomez is a painter and sculptor who lives and works in Newtonville, MA. He has taught at Wellesley College and Wheelock College and has exhibited his paintings widely in the Boston area. Gomez has been awarded public art sculptural commissions by The Challenger Learning Center, Tallahassee, FL, Harvard Medical School, and The Westover Branch Public Library in Arlington, VA. This is his second one-person show at O·H+T gallery. |
