Works on PaperMarietta Hoferer
April 2 - 24, 2004 O·H+T gallery is pleased to present Works on Paper by Marietta Hoferer as its April exhibition. Beginning with a grid drawn on paper, Hoferer builds intricately structured "drawings" out of small, hand cut pieces of strapping tape. Although the process is directed and methodical, the resulting works have a shimmering and illusive surface. As light plays over the layered, semitransparent tape, shapes appear and disappear, giving the works a transcendent luminosity. The element of time is significant in these works. Hoferer's painstaking process pays homage to the traditional work done by women, while acknowledging the fleeting nature of time. The geometric patterning of the work suggests weaving and basketry, as well as architectural detail, and the waxing and waning of its surface creates a rhythmic, musical cadence. Marietta Hoferer is a German born artist who lives in New York. She received an MFA from Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin, and attended Hunter College in New York and St Martins School of Art and Design in London. She has exhibited her work at Jeffrey Coploff in New York and throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. This is her first one person show at O·H+T gallery. |
