Social OrganizationRecent Paintings
September 6 - 28, 2002 O·H+T gallery begins its second season September 6 with Social Organization, an exhibition of paintings by Gregory Gomez. In this recent work, Gomez uses gouache (an opaque paint with a velvety finish) on paper to build up layers of what he describes as "varied graphic cultural information." Drawing on such diverse sources as pre-Columbian pictographs, genetic sequencing, and ancient cartography, he sinks an eclectic mix of geometric signs, symbols, and allusions to language into an array of rich, earthy colors. Gomez then subjects the surface to an industrial sandblaster, introducing an element of chance in the process, while literally and figuratively revealing new meaning in the combined imagery. The finished paintings have the look and feel of something that has been unearthed, as a well-worn artifact. Implying a succession of cultures, theartist arrives at what he hopes is an "uneasy state of visual harmony." Gregory Gomez lives and works in Newtonville, MA, has taught at Wellesley College and Wheelock College and has exhibited widely in the Boston area. Hehas a B.A. in Fine Arts and an M.F.A. in Printmaking from Washington University. This is his first show at O·H+T gallery. |
