The Weight of Light

June 6 - 28, 2008
Reception: Friday, June 6, 5:30-7:30pm

O·H+T Gallery is pleased to present The Weight of Light, an exhibition of bronze wall sculpture by Gregory Gomez. Although the gallery has exhibited Gomez's painting on several occasions, this is the first show devoted exclusively to his sculptural work.

Carole Anne Meehan, Curator at The Institute of Contemporary Art, describes Greg Gomez's sculptural wall works as "curious, invented relics." Why curious? To begin with, the work seems to suffer from an identity crisis. Sculpture or drawing? 2-D or 3-D? Gomez's work has the linear ease of drawing and the physical presence of sculpture, while the pebbled, patinated surfaces appear soft and pliant, more like organic matter than cast bronze. Depicting early maps, footprints of old world fortifications, airport plans, and vacant picture frames, Gomez's strange objects are like fossilized shadows - relics from his quirky lexicon.

As "relics," Gomez's wall works have a timeless quality. The Frames (right), his most recent piece, includes 3 empty picture frames, tilted askew. Positioned among Gomez's ancient fortifications and historic maps like forgotten family treasure, this piece transcends the moment and makes us wonder what Gomez is saying about the fate of more traditional wall art.

Gregory Gomez lives and works in the Boston area. He is an Associate Professor at Wheelock College and has exhibited his work widely in Boston, including at the DeCordova Museum and the Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts. Gomez has been awarded commissions for public works from the Chicago Elevated Station and Chicago Branch Library, Chicago, IL, The Challenger Learning Center, Tallahassee, FL, and the Neuroscience Department at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. This is Greg Gomez's third one-person exhibition at O·H+T Gallery.
