Thaddeus Beal

January 5 - 27, 2007
Reception: Friday, January 5, 5:30 - 8:00pm

O·H+T gallery is pleased to present New Paintings by Thaddeus Beal. Beal's work will also be included in the upcoming exhibition Big Bang! Abstract Painting for the 21st Century at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park from January 20-April 22, 2007.

Thaddeus Beal's new paintings investigate a world where time dissolves and science converges with mysticism. Although founded in the intellectual realm of non-linear physics, chaos theory, and fractal geometry, Beal now looks beyond to a place where "forces amplify each other" yet still "present a resonant stillness." Layered, geometric patterns suggest Islamic influences, perhaps from the time Beal spent making prints in Morocco. In Structured Response (at right) a centrally positioned star rests within a circle, though nothing in the painting is static. Movement here is not of the left to right variety. Instead, there is a spatial pulsing, as linear components and larger shapes dissolve into, and reemerge from, Beal's distinctive mixed media surface.

Though elements of Beal's current work are familiar, there is a new interest in the transcendent aspects of his subject matter and in the divergence of Eastern and Western thought. Where previous work celebrated the intellect and physicality of his mathematical and scientific sources, Beal now acknowledges those same sources as doorways to a world where "...time dissolves in a pale, distant light."

Thaddeus Beal attended Yale College and Stanford Law School and practiced law as a senior partner until 1984. He received a diploma and Fifth Year Certificate from the school of the Museum of Fine Arts and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, most recently at the Robert Steele Gallery in New York. Beal's work can be found in many private and public collections including that of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and he has been awarded the Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant in Painting in 2002 and 2006. This is Thaddeus Beal's third one-person show at O·H+T Gallery.
