New Paintings

Bryan Osburn

November 4 - 23, 2005
Reception: Saturday, November 5, 3:00-6:00 pm

O·H+T gallery is pleased to present the work of a painter who is new to the gallery, Bryan Osburn. Osburn's animated, abstract paintings explore visual and psychological space using stylized modernist shapes and patterns.

While reminiscent of Jetsonesque spacescapes and 50's decoration, Bryan Osburn's paintings also suggest the surreal landscapes of De Chirico, Dali, and Chagall. Osburn says it is his intention is to establish a sense of place, both physical and mental. In so doing, he creates oddly familiar environments that suggest déjà vu visions. Combining linear shapes and patterns with loops, curves and vaguely organic shapes, Osburn captures the chaotic coexistence of right and left brain thinking.

The space, color and imagery in these paintings is layered and compartmentalized to shape a strange world of shifting dimensions. In Eastern Seas Osburn paints angular shapes in flat, "off" colors such as flesh and grayish turquoise. He then punctures these two-dimensional planes with pockets of three-dimensional space, while weaving swatches of stripes and plaid throughout. The final layer is a filigree of black linework. This Swiss cheese landscape, teeming with animated shapes, line and pattern, is built up and penetrated to build a sense of history and explore the passage of time.

Bryan Osburn lives and works in Brooklyn. He has an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and has shown his work at Marlborough Gallery Chelsea, and Nora Haime Gallery, New York, NY. This is his first one-person exhibition at O·H+T gallery.
