180 Drawings and a Dunce Cap

Patrick Strzelec

March 5 - 27, 2004
Reception: Friday, March 5, 5:30 - 7:30 pm

O·H+T gallery is pleased to present 180 Drawings and a Dunce Cap, an installation of drawings and sculpture by Patrick Strzelec.

When viewed individually, Patrick Strzelec's spare, gestural drawings feature the same quirky animation as his sculpture. Formally, they address a broad range of issues specific to sculpture, yet they also speak to questions about what Strzelec refers to as "real life." Bold squiggles, cartoonish figures, and loopy lines characterize Strzelec's drawings, each of which documents an experience or idea.

When viewed together in a large group, individual drawings become singular notations working together to form a strange, abstract language. Pulsing with the rhythm of interacting shapes and marks, Strzelec's monochromatic field of drawings is punctuated by occasional bits of red and ochre. As the viewer scans this work a vague narrative emerges, suggesting the action sequences of black and white comics.

Patrick Strzelec lives in rural Pennsylvania and teaches at Harvard University. He exhibits his work at JG Contemporary/James Graham Gallery and Gary Snyder Fine Art, both in New York. His public commissions include the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, Rutgers University, and Buckhorn, Pound Ridge, NY. Strzelec has been awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rome Prize for Sculpture, and a NEA Grant for Sculpture. Recently he has received the Cillrialaig Project in Ireland. This is his second one-person show at O·H+T gallery.
